Experience four eclectic & provocative new dance works created by six talented Canadian artists!
CanAsian Dance sixth iteration of KickStart, commissioning and challenging choreographers to develop a short work through an Asian idea, concept, or practice. Yui Ugai & Ashvini Sundaram face their respective embodied memories of severance and resilience in their piece home l a n d . Katherine Ng, in calm and dormant with strength and power; sinuous and flowing embraces the beauty that lies in her family’s history. Marbella Carlos in Walang Hiya, contrasts cultural expectations with the sex-positivity of burlesque, examining the complexities of living in the diaspora in a racialized body. Shion Skye Carter & Miya Turnbull create the multidisciplinary Omote (面), integrating hand-crafted papier-mâché masks to challenge traditional ideas of beauty, while reflecting on personal identity and mixed race heritage.
Enjoy this captivating, diverse, and thought-provoking mixed bill from these brilliant Canadian Asian artists!
